What Is Psychiatry

Psychiatry is the area of medicine that focuses on mental health and wellbeing. A psychiatrist is a medical specialist who assesses, diagnoses and helps manage mental health conditions, and can consider both the psychological and physical factors that may affect how you are feeling. Concerns We Assess

Patients are commonly referred to psychiatry for assessment and support with concerns such as:

Low mood or persistent sadness Anxiety and worry Stress affecting daily life Sleep difficulties related to mental health Changes in mood, thinking or behaviour Review of an existing mental health diagnosis or treatment plan

Your GP can advise whether a psychiatry referral is suitable for your individual circumstances.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

At your first appointment, the psychiatrist will take time to understand your concerns, history and goals. The consultation is a confidential, respectful conversation, and you are welcome to ask questions at any point. After your assessment, the specialist will discuss findings and possible next steps with you, and keep your referring GP informed so your care stays connected.

Working With Your GP and Care Team

Psychiatry care works best when it is coordinated. We communicate with your referring GP and, where relevant, other members of your care team, so that everyone supporting you has clear and current information. This helps your ongoing care stay joined up between appointments.

How to Arrange a Referral

A current referral from your GP or another treating doctor is needed for specialist psychiatry consultations and helps with Medicare rebate eligibility. Referrals can be sent to reception@csdc.com.au, and our team will contact the patient to arrange an appointment. You can also call our reception team on (07) 5638 5325.

If You Need Urgent Support

Our psychiatry service is provided by appointment and is not an emergency or crisis service. If you or someone you know needs urgent help, call 000 in an emergency, or contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 for 24-hour crisis support. You can also speak with your GP about timely support options.
