How to Prepare
Your referring doctor or our team will advise on any specific preparation. In general, it can help to avoid a large meal just before the test, avoid smoking beforehand, and wear comfortable clothing that does not restrict your breathing. If you use inhaler medications, you may be asked whether to take or hold them before the test, so check with our team when your appointment is arranged.
What Happens During the Test
During spirometry, you breathe into a mouthpiece connected to a machine, following the technician’s instructions. You will usually be asked to take a deep breath in and then breathe out as hard and as long as you can. The test is repeated a few times to get reliable results. It is non-invasive and usually takes a short time to complete.
After Your Test
You can return to your usual activities straight after the test. Your results are provided to the specialist or GP who requested the test, who will discuss the findings and any next steps with you.
